DARKNESS AND LIGHT

Darkness and light,
they are not as separate
as we would want them to be.
It seems like each step
I take towards the light,
I see a bit more of the darkness.
With each step I move forward
I am confronted by that which
I need to let go of.
it is like a dance with the partner
I want to be with
and the shadows that live within me.
I tell myself I can do this
and the shadows surface and
remind me all I need to let go of
the self doubt,
the fear of being abandoned,
the voices saying I am not enough
and then the light speaks to me
and reminds I can do this
and I will never be alone
and I have everything I need
to achieve my dreams
I just need to believe.
So I focus on
believing and achieving
and know that I am not alone
in having to find the courage
to battle my darkness.
In the process,
I give thanks for the darkness
because it brings me
closer to the light.
they are not as separate
as we would want them to be.
It seems like each step
I take towards the light,
I see a bit more of the darkness.
With each step I move forward
I am confronted by that which
I need to let go of.
it is like a dance with the partner
I want to be with
and the shadows that live within me.
I tell myself I can do this
and the shadows surface and
remind me all I need to let go of
the self doubt,
the fear of being abandoned,
the voices saying I am not enough
and then the light speaks to me
and reminds I can do this
and I will never be alone
and I have everything I need
to achieve my dreams
I just need to believe.
So I focus on
believing and achieving
and know that I am not alone
in having to find the courage
to battle my darkness.
In the process,
I give thanks for the darkness
because it brings me
closer to the light.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY

DISCERNING
Kenny Rogers would sing
You got to know when to hold 'em,
Know when to fold 'em,
Know when to walk away,
And know when to run.
You got to know when to hold 'em,
Know when to fold 'em,
Know when to walk away,
And know when to run.
Life is filled with moments
when we must discern when
to hold on and make things work
and when to release them
because it is not our battle
or we know it is not right for us.
when we must discern when
to hold on and make things work
and when to release them
because it is not our battle
or we know it is not right for us.
This is not about gambling, like the song.
it is about discerning.
it is about listening for
guidance from within us about
whether we can make this work
or we need to release it and let it go.
it is about discerning.
it is about listening for
guidance from within us about
whether we can make this work
or we need to release it and let it go.
It is about developing
a deeper relationship with God
knowing what are our battles
and what are not.
a deeper relationship with God
knowing what are our battles
and what are not.
May we know when to hold on
tightly to that which is ours
and release with gentle tenderness
that which is not.
Amen.
tightly to that which is ours
and release with gentle tenderness
that which is not.
Amen.

I IS FOR INFUSION WATER BOTTLE

It has been a crazy week with grades from the Fall Semester due this week and personally I was screaming for vegan ice cream. However, when I could finally sit down to write I found that I was less interested in writing about any of our ice cream products or even our Indoor Outdoor Portable Grill. Rather my friends and I kept talking about our Infusion Water Bottle. So I is for Infusion Water Bottle
One of the things that I love about this bottle is that regardless of whether you are a person who likes to sip what they are drinking (like my wife) or chug (like me), this bottle works for everyone. The strainer, which comes with the bottle, allows you to position what you are infusing in ways that do not interfere with your drinking, whether you are a sipper or a chugger. If you are a sipper, the fruit or herbs you are infusing go below the strainer. If you are a chugger, then that which you are infusing goes above the strainer. The idea is that regardless of how you choose to drink your beverages, this water bottle works for you.

LESSONS FROM THE DESERT DWELLER
One of my favorite places to go for nourishment and inspiration is the Spiritual Literacy library on YouTube. This week I was pulled in by a one-minute story about the hospitality of a person known as nothing more than the Desert Dweller. According to the story, this person has lived in the desert most, if not all, of his life. At the end of each day, the Desert Dweller leaves a lit lantern by the side of the road and a now worn out note in a plastic sheet protector letting people know how to find his cottage should they be in need. This story comes from a book by Howard Thurman, Meditations of the Heart.
For me this story is about the attitude we have about our willingness to open our hearts and homes to others. It is not about whether or not people accept our invitation. Rather, it is about our willingness to extend the invitation in the first place.

LET THE LIGHT IN.
In my studies on grace, I have come across a number of analogies. One was that of floating as I discussed in the newsletter. Another was to think about grace like the rays of the sun. The sun is always there. Even when we cannot see it, the sun is present. Regardless of what time we get up, the sun is there. Sometimes, when we first wake up, we see the sun coming in through our window and we roll over and pull the covers over our head. Sometimes we wake up, but leave our doors and windows closed, blocking the sunlight from coming into our spaces. In each of these situations, we are keeping ourselves from experiencing the fullness of God’s grace.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY
This quote from Blaise Pascal helps us to understand why some have eyes that can see and ears that can hear and others do not. It is not about the physical senses, but the spiritual ones.
