HONORING YOU

Today and all I days
I just have to honor you
for being the great I am
I do not understand you,
or the way you work,
never have and never will.
All I can do is honor you.
The miracles which I have
witnessed and experienced baffle me
They are beyond my understanding
and leave me speechless and baffled.
All I can do is honor you.
Sometimes I think I have a clue,
I think I have an insight,
but your ways are not my ways
and your understandings are not mine.
So all I can do is honor you
for being the great I am.

I wish I could explain, but I can’t.
I wish I had the words, but I don’t
What I can do is sit in the fullness
of the Mystery which is you
and honor you.

NATIONAL PEANUT BUTTER MONTH

We all know that the end of this month is Thanksgiving, but how many of you know that this month is National Peanut Butter Month. So this week I am paying homage to Peanut Butter. I love peanut butter for a few reasons. One being that it has taught me some amazing life lessons.
A friend of mine tells the story of how much he hates peanut butter, but would make peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for his daughters who loved them. One day he realized that he was imposing his disdain for peanut butter on his daughter without even realizing it. He realized it when his daughter complained that he put too much jelly, which he loved, and not enough peanut butter on her sandwich. He was so focused on what he loved that he was not thinking about what she enjoyed and what spoke to her. To this day he still hates peanut butter, but puts more peanut butter on his daughter’s sandwiches and less jelly, which she enjoys, but not as much as the peanut butter. His story reminds me of how easy it is to put our needs and desires over others.

Thought for the day

Starting today, stop doing all things that do not honor you. Remember you are worthy of being treated and treating yourself with love, dignity, and respect.

ALL ARE WORTHY

Somebody recently asked me why I continue to write in this blog? How many different connections can one possibly make between food and spirituality? I just smiled and said the connections are endless. They challenged me to make a connection between food addictions and spirituality. As I have a few (olives, pot stickers, sashimi, anything spicy, and seafood), I found this interesting. Just about everyone I know has a food they crave. Recently I saw an article that talked about how fast foods activate similar parts of the brain as drugs. I can say, at least for me, that my addiction to my foods of choice is not about the food. It is about me. There are things about those foods in which I find comfort and a kind of satisfaction that I do not get from other foods, especially at certain times in the semester (grading frenzy), or around the holidays. When somebody offers me the opportunity to eat any one of the three things listed above, my mouth begins to salivate. Even writing about them, I find myself thinking about Guy Fieri when he talks about how the jets in his mouth are turning on while he watches one of the guests on his show cook one of their signature dishes.
