I AM WORTHY

If you want it,
just get it for yourself.
My wife says this to me
all the time,
because I rarely
buy anything that
is just for me.
I am worthy of
treating myself to
something every once in a while
like an everything bagel
with lox and Temptee cream cheese.
or getting my hair done
or sleeping in
or buyins some seafood
or new socks.
I am worthy of
rewarding myself for
the hard work that I do.
Those treats do not need
to cost much,
they just need to be
something I desire,
something I would not
normally do for myself.
These gifts are vital to my well being.
They are me paying me
for what I have accomplished.
They are those special moments
where I say I love you to myself
and remind myself
I am worthy.

SONG OF THE WEEK

This week's song of the week, by Katy Perry, is an anthem about our shared challenges and what its like to feel as though you’re not worthy. We are all worthy! When doors close it is to help us find the door that is just for us.  https://youtu.be/QGJuMBdaqIw

PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE

So I am sitting here thinking about the word practice. I have come to realize that I have this love hate relationship with the word. On the one hand I realize I cannot master anything if I do not practice. I cannot make something a habit unless I do it so often that it becomes part of my daily routine. There are things which I have practiced doing so often and for so long that I now just do them automatically.
My spiritual journey has been filled with opportunities to practice. It has not always been easy, but it has been important that I remain true to my practice. Several years ago I remember a friend of mine wrote about keeping a gratitude journal for November. It prompted me to keep one daily, not just in November. At first doing so daily was not easy. There were days I did not want to do it, but I pushed myself through and now it is just part of my practice and if I do not do it, I feel off. It is like something is incomplete and missing in my day.

ALL ARE WORTHY

Somebody recently asked me why I continue to write in this blog? How many different connections can one possibly make between food and spirituality? I just smiled and said the connections are endless. They challenged me to make a connection between food addictions and spirituality. As I have a few (olives, pot stickers, sashimi, anything spicy, and seafood), I found this interesting. Just about everyone I know has a food they crave. Recently I saw an article that talked about how fast foods activate similar parts of the brain as drugs. I can say, at least for me, that my addiction to my foods of choice is not about the food. It is about me. There are things about those foods in which I find comfort and a kind of satisfaction that I do not get from other foods, especially at certain times in the semester (grading frenzy), or around the holidays. When somebody offers me the opportunity to eat any one of the three things listed above, my mouth begins to salivate. Even writing about them, I find myself thinking about Guy Fieri when he talks about how the jets in his mouth are turning on while he watches one of the guests on his show cook one of their signature dishes.
