KINDNESS

Piety used to make me think
of those who were holier than thou.
Then I learned that piety meant pious
which meant
kind
Kindess
is about showing
grace,
compassion,
gentleness,
love,
and concern for other
Kindness
is about the body, mind, and soul.
It is about our words
and our actions
being one
Kindness
is about being
loving,
giving,
caring,
empathetic and
generous
Kindness
is about doing unto others
as you would have them
do unto you.
Kindness
is unconditional.
It is about giving
without expectations.
It is about what we
experience
as much as what others do
Kindness
is about blessing
and being blessed.
It is all about being kind.

COMPLIMENTS

You are such a gift to our team, she said.
and the words touched my heart
and nourished my soul.
At some level I know others words
should not matter,
but sometimes they are
what I need to hear.
Sometimes it does help
to hear those affirming words,
those compliments from others,
those answers to hidden prayers.
We forget that compliments
nourish our soul and the souls of others.
We forget to feed others
with words which
nourish their self esteem,
remind them they are of value,
and they too are creators of the Ultimate.
May we remember that compliments
are a way to feed God’s sheep,
to demonstrate love for one another,
and to heal wounded souls.

BEGETTING

Goodness begets goodness.
kindness begets kindness.
Gratitude begets gratitude.
Love begets love.
What we put into the world
spreads out and touches others.
If I want to be surrounded by goodness,
I have to radiate it.
If I want to be surrounded by kindness,
I have to practice it.
if I want to be grateful, I have to have an
attitude of gratitude.
If I want to be loved,
I have to offer love.
I have to be the glue
to which goodness,
kindness,
gratitude,
and love
Stick.
I have to remember to beget
that which I want to birth
in this world.
What I beget is
what will continue to beget
long after I am gone.

HOSPITALITY

I was reminded of a video
about a young boy and an older man
who created a space
to let each other in.
That is what hospitality is about.
its about taking people
into our worlds.
Its about letting them into
our hearts, mind, souls
and saying you are welcome.
Its about breaking down barriers,
tearing down walls,
overcoming obstacles.
its about building bridges which connect us,
not walls which separate us.
its about connecting people
and hearts
one at a time.

BEING MINDFUL

You left the light on.
The water is still dripping.
Are you going to throw that away?
How often do we forget
to be mindful
about our environment
and our resources.
I am one who gets distracted
and forgets to shut the light off
I leave the water running
from time to time.
I do not always treat the environment
with kindness, dignity, and respect.
Being mindful means
I have to be present
when eating and
experience the aroma,
textures,
appearance
and taste
of my food.
It means I am mindful
of my utilities and when
and why I am using them
it means I honor that which
is in my home and
regift it when I no longer
appreciate its value
Being mindful brings me
closer to a place of that
amazing peace,
because I am seeing and
honoring the Divine in all.
Because of this,
I am going to work on
being mindful
and honoring all.

LIKE FRED ASTAIRE AND GINGER ROGERS

They glide
They slide
They look so graceful
They always make each other
Look good.
They skate
They jump
They leap
They make it look so effortless
They always make each other
Look good

As a dancer in life
I hold my wife
We glide
We slide
We jump
We leap
We make it look so easy
And we focus on making each other
Look good

A DIFFERENT KIND OF KINDNESS PROJECT

The other day, I was sent a story about an interaction between a homeless man and a manager at a Chik-fil-a. The homeless man had come in asking for remnants and anything they might be throwing away. Instead the manager offered to pray with him and then gave him a full meal. It is in these acts of radical hospitality that we practice unity. Whether this story is true or not is not important. What is important is the lesson it teaches about how to practice unity. When we honor the dignity in others and treat them with respect, then we work together in unity to promote love and kindness in the world
The world is full of people like this. The other day as I was in my mart cart waiting to check out at the grocery store, a young boy offered to help take all the groceries out of my cart. While I did not need the help, I could see that this was something he wanted to do and so I graciously accepted. What I learned was this this was a practice his parents were teaching him. Each day he is to do something kind for someone. When he does he gets a kindness sticker on his calendar. When he has a full calendar, his parents do something for him. His mom told me that one month, his act of kindness was to tell his parents they did not need to reward him for being kind. They did anyway.  He has learned to work in unity with others to help achieve little goals.

LEARNING ABOUT KINDNESS (PART 2)

So many people in my life have inspired me with their ability to be kind. Tristine Rainer was write when he said that writing about these people help me to internalize and possess the very qualities that intrigued me the most. I have been doing this for a while and realized as I sat down today that I have internalized some of the qualities of someone who showed me intense kindness when I was in graduate school.
Her name is Dr Diane M Samdahl and she is one of those people who has left her name inscribed on my heart. She taught me so much about life, not just recreation and leisure studies. When I look back on my relationship and journey with her, there is one moment in particular that I will remember forever.
