IS THAT GOD?

Sometimes we try to be courteous,
we try to be nice
and respectful.
We don’t answer the phone
when we are out with people.
We try to pay full attention
to the one we are with.
We try to be present.
Then the question was asked
what if that is God calling?
What if we are sitting here talking about nothing
and God needs you to be of service
do we answer
or do we ignore.
Does it matter on who we are with
and what they say?
What if those moments in life,
we view as annoyances are really
Divine interventions?
What if we could see the Divine
in those moments we want to ignore?
What if those moments are
our invitations to be the Good Samaritan?
What if God called, and we did not answer?

SPIRITUAL BUMPS

Sometimes we hit a
spiritual bump in our life.
That thing that jars us
and makes us think.
The moment that we come
off of autocruise and
call on our spiritual practices
to do more then get through it,
but to understand the meaning
to the spiritual bump.
This morning I woke up in tears,
grieving losses
which happened years ago.
It was through prayer and processing,
which I came to realize I had not
taken the time to grieve.
The message which triggered this
was not about me
but what was about me
was the grief it triggered.
The grief over my isolation.
The grief over the loss of
who I thought were friends.
The grief over things I thought I had grieved,
only to discover I had not.
Sometimes we need those spiritual bumps
to come to us in our dreams,
in our lives, and
in our visions
to give us deeper meaning
into our lives
and the purpose behind them

GOD'S PLAN

God’s plan for our lives,
is not always ours,
well truth be known it rarely is.
See God this way of bringing
people and situations into our lives
which we would often times prefer
were not the answer
to our prayers.
God’s plan for our life
is not about what we want
for our lives
but what are going to help us
develop a deeper relationship with God.
It might be the person who
gets on your last nerve, or
having to wait 3 ½ hours for a ride home,
when you cannot drive, or
that situation which makes you
want to have a meltdown at Walmart, or
you can fill in your own blank,
God’s plan is not about what we want
or who we want to interact with.
God’s plan is about us and
removing the obstacles which
are blocking us from our own
evolution and deepening
relationship with God.
This is God’s plan for us.
Growing closer to the
Divine who lives in us and
guides us through our lives.
This is God’s plan.

GOODNESS

Goodness, Thoreau said,
is the only investment that never fails.
What if goodness was a fund?
What if every act of goodness or kindness
was a deposit?
How wealthy am I?
What is my fund looking like?
When I think about goodness,
I am reminded of lyrics from a song
which cause me to ask if I have done any good today.
At the end of the day can I say
I cheered up those who needed some love and light.
Can I say I made someone find the
happiness within themselves again.
Can I say I helped someone
who needed a friendly hand.
These are the things which are
worthwhile investments
Random acts of kindness
Words which uplift
That which makes it on earth
As it is in heaven

THE NEW STORY

When I was a little girl
I worried about being liked.
I cared what people thought,
but not as much as I did
as I grew older.
I went through a phase where
I cared about first impressions,
others evaluations.
what they thought,
what they said, and
what they believed about me.
I thought others thought
more about me then they did.
Now I know others rarely think of me
and if they do,
is not as often I could imagine.
They may have an impression
or an evaluation.
They may tell me what they think,
but that is about them
and what they believe
and what their expectations are.
their story is about them,
not me.
What matters most,
is what I think of me and
that what I think of me
is positive, loving, and affirming.

PRAYER

Prayer is not just the words we utter,
It Is also the deeds.
it is the way we walk through life
it is the way we interact with the world
it is the reverence we bring
into our words and deeds.
it is about our awareness,
our ability to see the Divine
to hear the needs and cries of others
it is about our ability to sense God and
the people of God in the world
It is about us knowing God in ourselves
and others

PAPER TABERNACLES

It was decades ago
when she left three little pieces of paper
on my treadmill that said
I
Love
You
They still are with me
in my drawer.
They are sacred, holy and
a paper tabernacle
holding the gift of love
from the one who loves me
unconditionally
Her notes are not alone.
They are accompanied
by sacred notes from others
images,
gifts of sacred love from others
Through writing we can express
our intimacy,
our friendship,
our love,
what others mean to us.
Our letters have the potential
to become someone’s
paper tabernacle

A holy space
where the sacred gift of love is stored
where one keeps reminders of what one means,
the friendship we share,
the intimate moments,
which bond us together.
They are more than just pieces of paper.
They are sacred and holy.
They are paper tabernacles.

LIVE IN THE LAYERS

Recently, a colleague shared with me a poem by Stanely Kunitz called “The Layers.” There is one line in it that stuck out to me, it says, “Live in the layers, not on the litter.”  As I have been thinking about this line over the last few days I found myself having visions of mountains that have been blasted apart to create highways and the layers of rock which are visible in the walls surrounding me as I drive. The layers are a legacy of the history of that rock.
I remember a friend telling me about having a similar experience while in the grand canyon. Each layer tells a story about a different point in time in the development of this piece of nature. I have thought about trees and how there are layers that become visible when looking at a felled tree. Each layer is an important part in the life and history of the tree. Each layer tells a story about what happened during that time, what happened to that part of nature and what was done to it. The same is true for us.
