Music

Music is about healing.
it is the medicine which
can bless me,
cleanse me,
heal me,
calm me,
soothe me,
energize me,
and minister to
my soul
Music comes and ministers
to my senses.
it is not always the whole piece.
Sometimes is it a single note.
a few notes
a word
a chorus
or the way it is played.
Music can create something
sacred within me.
It can be an offering
to the eternal.
It can be a reminder of
how the universe is greater
then any single moment in time.
Music is;
it it not always describable;
it just is.

SIMPLE THINGS

Sometimes it is the simple things in life
that bring us joy.
like the smell of freshly mowed grass,
or waking up to a pot of freshly brewed coffee,
or when a friend surprises me with one of my favorite treats
or when I get a paratransit reservation
it is not just the big things that bring us joy;
it’s also the simple things.
It’s the smells, sounds, tastes, textures, and experiences
which put a smile in our hearts and souls.
It’s the little things which bring us joy.
So today focus on doing something simple for yourself
and others
and do something simple
to bring joy in to your life and theirs.

STAYING A BEGINNER

I used to want to be an expert,
however, I realized I was less open
to learning.
Now I work at
staying a beginner
This mindset is not easy.
It  means I drop my expectations
preconceived ideas and
anything I believe an experience
will be like.
What if we approached everyone,
everything
and every situation
as if it were brand new.
What if we paid attention
to all the details, the textures
tastes,
smells
and sights?
What if we approached everything
with wonder?
Would I experience disappointment
or frustration?
How could I if I had released all my
assumptions about how something would be,
my fantasies, and my preconceived ideas?
Would I struggle with relationships
if I remembered they are just like me?
What if I remembered to see everyone
with fresh eyes?
What if I remembered that
even when our intentions are different
they are good?
Would I procrastinate less
or experience less anxiety
because I am not worried about
whether I will succeed or not
or how hard it might be.
What if I focused on what
a new experience this might be?
What if I let go of what I think I know
and lived life with a beginner’s mind.

BEYOND BORING

Growing up there was one thing,
well several, I could not say.
One was that I was bored.
My parents taught me that
everything is interesting.
if I thought it was boring,
I just had not spent enough time with it.
Nothing is boring.
This is a lesson that has gotten me through
years of education,
books which did not initially speak to me,
professors whose style did not initially appeal to me.
Boredom was about me
not digging deep enough,
spending enough time with it
not having yet discovered its gifts
and all that it had to offer.
Today, when I feel something is boring,
I remember my early lessons and
spend more time with it,
continuing to get to know it,
explore it,
seeking out its gifts,
and that which, like us
makes us special.
Do I do this with everything,
sadly no
However, I am left wondering
what did I miss because
I was not willing to move
beyond boring

LOST & FOUND

When I know what to do,
I do it.
When I know where to go,
I go there.
When I think I know the answers,
I forget who is helping me.
It is when I don’t know what to do,
that I work the hardest,
and dig the deepest into my soul.
it is when I am feeling lost
and without direction
that I realize who my GPS “
has been in my life.
We know what we know
because the Divine has
taught us,
nurtured us,
guided us, and
provided for us.
We have gotten this far
because God has been with us,
guiding us,
directing us,
protecting us,
and transforming us.
Our growth in life happens when
we get out of the way and
let God guide us,
direct us,
teach us, and
transform us.
God lets us think we are growing
until we are ready to be humbled and
remember our understandings are not God’s.
God lets us think we are driving
until we are lost and
need God’s Protection System (GPS)
This has given new meaning to
Lost and Found

REMEMBERING

Oops, they did it again.
This person once again
did not live up to my expectations.
Once again I found myself frustrated
and not wanting to have anything
to do with them.
Then I remembered this is about me
and my expectations.
They never agreed to them,
I just expected them to do so.
Perhaps more importantly
I was allowing this one thing,
this one experience to make me
forget all the good they had done.
I had to work at remembering
the good things,
the times they were present,
the moments they were affirming, and
the moments they lived up to my expectations.
I am sure there are moments,
intentionally or not,
that I have not lived up to someone’s expectations.,
or that I have hurt their feelings,
and made someone forget
all the times I was loving,
nurturing,
and kind.
May we remember the goodness
in the wake of the pain.
May we remember for others
as we would like others to remember
about us.
